In our pursuit of engaging with and supporting our local community, we are creating a monthly spotlight on our blog and social media called "FIT4MOM for Equity". We will be highlighting area businesses, organizations, and programs who are working to bring equity to everyone living in the Grand Rapids area.
STEM Greenhouse
Created in 2014 by Dr. Keli Christopher, STEM Greenhouse was formed to address the lack of diversity within STEM professions. Dr. Christopher is "the first black person to get a Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Illinois and the third black woman in the world to hold a Ph.D. in that field". Her personal experiences created a desire to encourage and support STEM education in the greater Grand Rapids area, working with various districts, races, genders, and socioeconomic classes.
STEM Greenhouse currently operates three programs, along with additional programs done with partnering organizations:
- Sankofa STEM Academy (summer program in a college setting)
- STEM Scholars (middle school students in an after-school setting)
- Girls Count Math Club (for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls)
Looking for some awesome STEM lab videos for kids? Dr. Christopher has generously created fantastic videos on the STEM Greenhouse website. Check them out here.
Thank you, STEM Greenhouse, for pursuing equity for our neighbors. You are making such a beautiful difference in our city and the lives of those around you!
