Why Do You Do What You Do?

Let’s start this off with a little question to ponder: why do you do what you do? I think it is a good all-life encompassing question.

Why do you do what you do?

Think of all of the areas of life that this can apply to: activities with your children, working full time, staying home full time, running a small business from home, volunteering, social events, exercise, rest.

Why do you do what you do?

I know that the answers may look different for each of us. We each have different needs and wants. Our desires and goals vary. The things in life that bring me fulfillment may not be the same things in life that bring you fulfillment.

Why do you do what you do?

In addition to staying at home full time, I absolutely love being part of the FIT4MOM Grand Rapids team. When the topic came up of me becoming more involved with the day to day tasks of the group, I was so excited. At that point, I had been part of FIT4MOM for three and a half years and was feeling this longing in my life to do more. At that point, I didn’t know that FIT4MOM would help fulfill that desire but I simply knew I had a lot to offer somewhere. I didn’t know what that would look like. A few months later, I’d like to think that I have lightened the load and added a fresh perspective to some areas of the business since I joined. But an aspect of my “job” was actually what really had me digging into the question I keep posing to you: Why do I do what I do?

Sometime I struggle to find my rhythm when it comes to writing a blog post. I know that this is not an uncommon feeling with people who enjoy writing and I even remember reading this quote somewhere a very long time ago: “If you always wait until you feel inspired to write, you probably won’t write that often.” Most of the time, I need to find a very quiet space with no one else around and close down every window on my computer except for the document window that I need for writing (obviously…). Well, I had this one blog post that just flowed out of me so easily. The thoughts in my head made sense as soon as my fingers typed them out. I wrote it in under an hour (VERY RARELY does that happen). It required very little editing (again...VERY RARELY does that happen). I was really looking forward to sharing it, not because I thought it was a masterpiece but because it felt so honest and genuine, like something I would have appreciated reading at a certain time in my parenting journey. Well, the post ended up causing very little social media stir and it’s tough to admit it, but I was kind of disappointed. I felt like perhaps I hadn't done my job well. And when I realized the reaction I was having to not receiving affirmation from Facebook or Instagram or the comments section, I realized that I needed to recalibrate my emotions and intentions for why I do what I do in this area of my life. I do this because I love to write and I want to be able to use writing to encourage other moms. I do this because I don’t have the answers but I do have the desire to help others not feel alone. My desire for my posts is not that you will affirm ME for writing it but that the post itself will give YOU the affirmation that you need to keep pushing forward in the often tiring and sometimes monotonous journey of motherhood. (PLEASE do not take this as me wanting more “likes” and “loves” and comments and shares on my posts. I’m serious. If I notice a major increase in social media reactions to my posts, I’ll stop writing forever. I’ll do it. Don’t test me.)

Why do you do what you do?

I do what I do because I love my family. I do what I do because I love myself. I do what I do because my Creator wants me to fully love people. I do what I do to acknowledge that I am by no means perfect (i.e. the example I gave above) but that I strive to learn what I can through all of life’s little and big moments.

So...Why do you do what you do?
